Return of Nuggets 1: Forum Comments From Late April 2008

Forum commentary I did from March 2008 through July 2008, when I didn't have enough time for the detailed and extensive reports I like to do, is being posted in early October, 2008. The primary themes are how the Nuggets are blowing a great (and expensive!) opportunity to play the game of basketball in such a way that respects the sport and that takes as much advantage as possible of who they have on the roster. The 2006-09 Nuggets have turned out to be an excellent case study of how not to run a basketball team; many things you should not do if you are a basketball manager or coach can be identified from what the Nuggets actually did during these years.

In these comments, do not look for the usual huge amount of detail and proof that you see in the ordinary releases here at Nuggets 1. Some of this is more like everyday conversation than like top quality sports writing. On the other hand, some of the comments do include some detailed reasoning and proof that I pride myself on in the primary reports I release.

LATE APRIL 2008 FORUM COMMENTARY ON THE NUGGETS, ESPECIALLY ABOUT THEIR MISTAKES

lmao at the title of this thread; it has to be the best title of the year. (The title of the thread was 'NBA team at Ballhogging Streetballers.")

I just don't understand the Nene situation. If he is recovered, then why did he play only 11 minutes in this elimination game, in a series where the Lakers have scored at will in the paint? If he's not good enough to play at least 20 minutes, then why play him at all?

AI, Melo, JR, have 3 years of college combined. The Nuggets need top brains on their staff more so than most other teams.

Well, JR was the winner over GK in the GK-JR war after all because JR loves video games.

AI has to go along with GK unless the Nuggets get a serious point guard, unless Atkins comes back strong, or unless AI rededicates himself to running the point full time instead of part time.

No true starting PG = no possibility of winning a playoff series.

At least those super talented Blazer and Kings teams used to take the Lakers to 6 or 7 games. The Nuggets have to be about as good as those Blazer and Kings teams but can only come up with routs. Sad really.

The run and gun can never be a strategy that you can use by itself to win big in the NBA. Even when it works it is not enough by itself to maximize the offense. You have to have some things up your sleeve besides that for your offense. And if the Nuggets did want to be a full scale run and gun team, they had to start JR Smith. The fact that they refused to do that made the idea of relying only on the run and gun concept even more asinine.

The depths to which Carmelo Anthony sunk in this game are disturbing to say the least. His facial expressions during the game were disturbing as well. Melo's preference to be mellow smashed head on into the ugly reality of the Nuggets this year. But does he have enough knowledge of the real situation, enough strength of character, and enough real sway within the franchise to be able to help bring about change? We will know the answer soon.

Hollinger at ESPN says a source has told him that GK will return next year no matter what.
